Okay - I missed the reunion - but from all the names I see - I must be among the "older" generation of cadets. I started in 1957 - playing the fife and believe it or not Fr. Egan was the fife instructor. Margaret Strucek saw something in me - I don't know what - and told me off the fife line - you are going to be our drum majorette. Cheryl Conway Andersen was the Color Guard Captain. Cathy and Dorothy Cullen were also in the guard - Walter Sisson, Bob Figgers, George Riess, Pete Franceschina, my brother Chuck were some of the horn players. Mary Griffin on drums. - Artie by then a fife instructor. Dennis McCoy - Dennis Messmer, Fran and John Keenan, the Nealon brothers. Then Jim Martin came on board for fife, a little later Jack Meehan and two other Skyliners came in to teach the horn land drum lines. The bells ( I love them still) were gone and the files not far behind. I "retired" in 66 or 67 - don't quite remember. My brother played Danny Boy from the old school when Msgr. Fox passed away. Are any of the really "old" guard around any more??
My cousin Bob Murphy is still involved with the Sunrisers - I know seveal of the older crowd went there or to the Skyliners. I have a 45 with my brother playing a trumpet solo with the Skyliners. The Skyliners have a web site if anyone is interested.

Hi Kathi, By "Bells" do you mean the glockenspiels? (Spelled wrong no doubt) A portable xylophone so to speak? I remember them from watching the corps play in the Maspeth Days parade. They were already gone when I picked up a horn for the Cadets. Peace, Joe

Yes I do and I wrote bells b/c I wasn't sure of the spelling. We have a boy scout troup up here that is bells and drums. They went to Disney World this summer on invitation. I love to see them parade. They do St. Pat's - the biggest St. Pat's in the Hudson Valley, Little League openings, Homecoming and all that good stuff that goes with small town USA. When did you join the corps - obviously long after I retired.
Blessed be Kathi

Hi Kathi, yes it was after you had "retired". Actually it was my secong go round with the Cadets. My first attempt was as a fifer. Not sure about the date, sometime in the mid 60's. It was about the same time the Flynn Bros were there. I recall the Fransechinas only b/c they were in my older Brother's (Robert) grade and he had talked about them on occasion. Mostly Jeff I think. I don't recall him there. My second go-round was in the Seventies, around the same time the Teen Club was inaugurated. Many of the Club staff were in the Corps at that time. Maybe mid to late 70's. Eileen Strucek was Majorette at the time. Whew, such a long ago time. But, it was a Blast! Peace, Joe

Kathi, the Sunrisers also have a website, and Cousin Bob is in the Sun Hall of Fame, along with Pete and Dave Franceshina, John Griffin, and myself, all Cadet alumni. Who from the Cadets went to Sky? Also, trumpets are not used in Senior drum corps, must have been a soprano bugle.

Good Morning, Jack! I can't seem to access the bio info or pictures on the Sunrisers web page in the "Hall of Fame" section. It says it's a work in progress--does that mean it's "under constuction" and not viewable at this time? Help! Please e-mail me at armymom91wm6@aol.com. Thanks! How are Theresa and the kids? Hope to hear from you soon.

My brother Chuck Murphy went to the Skyliners. It was a trumet solo. Don't forget this was many , many years ago. Jack Meehan was one of my brother's horn instructors at St. Mary's and w/the Skyliners. When were you in the cadets?? I have serious brain drain - probably b/c I work in a high school. Put in for a transfer to an elementary building - I need a little less stress in my life right now. Interview is tomorrow - right after I sit in on a discipline hearing for one of my members. Some days being the union president in not a good thing. I really need a vacation - August is not coming soon enough. Kat

Sorry I missed you, Kathy Young! Who else from Cadets did you see at the Homecoming? It was a mob scene--did you see Mary Griffin? She was there; so was Carolyn Tranka and several "older" Cadets I don't think you know. Yes, we're in the planning stages for a Cadet reunion. So please get in touch with Susan; pictures would be great! Any old equipment hanging around?
Kathi Murphy--good luck on the interview! Dad was a Union leader at Sperry's way back when. I remember some of the things he had to go thru! Good luck with that too! Talk with you soon.

hello to Alicia Gretschel Herbst from the former Diane Bowen. Although I was not a Cadet, it was great to know that some of my former classmates are as interested as I am in finding St. Marys alumni. I am now living on Long Island with my husband. My daughter is 30 years old and living in Seaford.I know you were great friends with Pat Howard and Margaret Mole any ideas where they are? I'm also frantically trying to locate Teresa Schietroma. Last time I saw her was in D.C. in 1979. Our mothers were great friends and I have a charming mimento that I would like to pass along to her.Would love to hear from you.Best Wishes.

Kathi, my first year in the Cadets was 1964. I started on snare drum for about 1 month but because I was the nbiggest 8 year old, I was put on the bass drum and played it inthe Cadets up to 1972 or 3. I went on to the Sunrisers in 1974 where I played bass drum until 1998. I know your cousin Bob well, I must disagree with you about the trumpet solo. Trumpets were never used in senior drum corps, it had to be a soprano bugle as trumpets were illegal equipment which would have resulted in a corps penalty. Please check with your brother on this.

Jack - It was for an exhibition - no scoring . Would check with my brother but he passed away in 83 - don't feel bad there was no way you could know. I still have the trumpet he used. None of my crew went for the horn - percussion and flutes - school band. As for my cousin Bob - I am sooooo sorry - only kidding - he and I have a great relation - his mom- oops!! I'm going to get myself in trouble with him one of these days. All kidding aside - he and I have a great relationship with each other - you probably also know his wife Laurel Knoebel Murphy. She was in the color guard. I'm trying to remember if any of the Spangler cousins went to the Sunrisers or not. We have a corps up here called 20th Century Limited that my neighbor and I swear we are going to join as soon as our arthritic knees are fixed. We've been saying this for years. About the most drum corps we see any more is the exhibitions at Dietz Stadium or the rare trip to see a competition in Springfield Mass. and that is usually an overnighter- too darn old to drive back after all the excitement of reliving our childhoods. Got to get back to work - will probably be here several hours yet. Graduation is rapidly approaching. Kathi

Kathi, I just spoke to Bob and he speaks very highly of you too. Of course I know Laurel too. I am going to the competition at Dietz Stadium on Aug. 14, I go every year, maybe I can meet you there. He also told me your brother studied trumpet, but played soprano with the Bronx Kingsmen, he didnt mention Sky, his age is probably catching up with him. I have stated before of the Cadet alumni who joined Sun, were Pete and Dave Franceschina and John Griffin. No knowledge of anybody else ever going on to other corps. You have a younger sister who was also in the Cadets dont you?

Jack - I hope we can meet at Dietz!! Have you ever been there - it is kind of small but homey. Yes my sister Ginny was in cadets for a very short time - drum corps was not her thing. Actually Ginny and I are leaving on the 16th of August for a week of lighthouse touring and whale watching in Maine. I keep trying to get Laurel to leave Bob home alone and come with us but he is just too spoiled. Their kids are coming up sometime during the summer to see my daughter in the Tuxedo Renaissance Faire. It will be nice to have a bunch of kids in the house. I hate to cook for just 2 or 3 - actually I don't know how to cook for less than 6. I remember the Kingsmen - even thought of joining their guard but work just kept getting in the way. By then both my parents had passed away and it was just Chuck, Ginny and myself so survival was more important than sheer joy at that time. I still get goosebumps and jump in and out of my skin when I hear horms and drums. Must be in the blood. Got to get back to work - graduation is Saturday morning and I am still checking grades. Kathi

Jack Oh DUH!!! You said you go to Dietz every year - I am having serious brain drain. Do you live in the Hudson Valley or just travel up for the event? I really wish I could get Bob up here for a relaxing week end or a few days more than that. K
